New Quizzes: A Guide to Secure and Accessible Settings

The New Quizzes Tool provides faculty with several options to support student access to quizzes and support faculty in monitoring student activity and progress during quizzes, tests and exams.

Settings options and considerations found in the New Quizzes Settings menu include:

  1. Shuffle questions: Enabling this setting will randomize the order of all questions in your quiz. This can encourage students to focus on their own quiz, particularly when paired with a time limit (see point 4). Please note, this option is not necessary when questions are being pulled randomly from an Item Bank.
  2. Shuffle answers: Enabling this setting will randomize the display order for the possible responses on all multiple choice, multiple answer, and matching questions.
    • Be careful when shuffling answers if you have questions that reference a specific item order (i.e., "A and C", "B only", "All of the Above").
  3. Require a student access code: Enabling this setting will allow you to create an access code that students must enter before they can begin the quiz.
  4. Time limit: Set a reasonable time limit and consider implementing additional time using Universal Design for Learning Principles to remove barriers for all students.
  5. Detect Multiple Sessions: Enabling this setting will flag any student who accesses the quiz using multiple devices, browsers, or tabs at the same time. Students will also receive a warning when they open a second session.
    • Flags can be found under the New Quizzes Moderate menu.
  6. Filter IP Address: Allows faculty to restrict quiz access to Mohawk College computer labs only. The IP Address range for Mohawk College is 142.222.0.0 to 142.222.254.254
  7. Hide results from students: Enabling this setting allows faculty to choose if/how students can access their quiz results, such as whether they can see their score and/or the quiz questions and answers.
    • If this setting is not enabled, students can see their score, along with all questions and answers from their quiz. Please note: any questions requiring manual grading are not included in this score. This can cause confusion when points are lower than expected.

Further details and explanation of these settings can be found in the following Canvas Guide: How do I manage settings for a quiz in New Quizzes?

Quiz Security with Respondus LockDown Browser and Monitor

Additional quiz security can be provided by enabling Respondus products, such as:

  • Respondus LockDown Browser: “Locks” students into a secure browser for the duration of the quiz so they are unable to access other applications on their device.
  • Respondus Monitor: Requires students to record themselves during quizzes using a personal webcam. The recording can be viewed by faculty upon submission. (Must be used in conjunction with Respondus LockDown Browser.)
  • Live Proctoring using Teams: Allows faculty to monitor students in real-time via Microsoft Teams video. (Must be used in conjunction with Respondus LockDown Browser).
